Chetwoods offers students and new architects free London work space Chetwood Associates is opening up its offices to students and newly qualified architects who need a London base as they try to establish themselves. The philanthropic gesture, dubbed the Green Room, will be launched during the London Festival of Architecture but is set to continue indefinitely. Initially, up to six people at a time will be offered a week’s free use of the space to showcase their work, access computers and other resources, and arrange and prepare for meetings and interviews in a relaxed “coffee house-style” environment. The Green Room is part of Chetwoods’ reception area which is currently used for meetings. Its picture windows look on to Clerkenwell Green, giving participants the chance to display their designs to passers-by. The first week will feature the work of students from the Birmingham School of Architecture, with a private view planned for June 24. Kevin Singh, course director at Birmingham School of Architecture, said: “[We are] delighted to have the opportunity to continue our strong working relationship with Laurie Chetwood and Chetwood Associates by exhibiting in their London offices as it provides our best students with the opportunity to showcase their work in the capital.” A spokeswoman for Chetwoods said the practice, which often holds big parties during the festival, was prompted by the recession to do something more practical to help young architects over the longer term. The opened-up space would also provide networking opportunities for its own staff, she added. |
