The Peer 2 Peer University is an online community of open study groups for short university-level courses. Think of it as online book clubs for open educational resources. The P2PU helps you navigate the wealth of open education materials that are out there, creates small groups of motivated learners, and supports the design and facilitation of courses. This – Peer 2 Peer University – is one of those concepts that I would love to strongly endorse as a step in a different direction from traditional universities. It reflects much of what I write about on this site (parts of the proposed document read very much like my post on content, conversation, and accreditation). Yet, as I reviewed the site, I find myself in disagreement with certain elements. I like the approach of openness (it’s hard to argue otherwise, especially in education where we can open doors to more hopeful futures simply through providing access to learning opportunities). I like the view of shorter courses. I like the grassroots «we had a good idea and did something about it» approach. I also like the participatory design of learning.
What do I disagree with? I disagree with the notion of «sense makers». We make sense personally. No one makes sense for us. I’m also somewhat unsure of the formality of this approach. It bears within it too much of the existing university model. Why centralize things? The only thing we really need to centralize is the accreditation (i.e. open accreditation). Who really cares where or how people «got their learning»? Use existing networks of learning opportunities. This is P2P University administered through centralized models (which, then means, it’s not really P2P). I love the concept. I like the vision. I don’t like the execution. It’s foreplay when we need consummation.

A grandes rasgos, una red informática entre iguales (en inglés, peer-to-peer -que se traduciría de par a par- o de punto a punto, y más conocida como P2P) se refiere a una red que no tiene clientes ni servidores fijos, sino una serie de nodos que se comportan simultáneamente como clientes y como servidores respecto de los demás nodos de la red. Es una forma legal de compartir archivos de forma similar a como se hace en el email o mensajeros instantáneos, sólo que de una forma más eficiente.
Este modelo de red contrasta con el modelo cliente-servidor, el cual se rige mediante una arquitectura monolítica donde no hay distribución de tareas entre sí, sólo una simple comunicación entre un usuario y una terminal, en la que el cliente y el servidor no pueden cambiar de roles.

The ambiguity of both terms does not allow the affirmation of a new paradigm for technology-enhanced distance education, but it seems that some ideas do change key aspects in the old curricula:
- the Net as the platform, or the multi-device oriented system, changes the concept of studying at any place, any time;
- collective intelligence and rich user experiences affects the concept of authority in educational systems;
- tags and RSS readers allow us to revisit traditional taxonomy, knowledge organization and information retrieval;
- the option to choose between several devices to work on learning tasks (PDA, iPod, computer…) seems to be a technical and not relevant question, but that implies the option to learn at every time: while travelling, walking, etc. In Web 2.0, the difference between study times and other times seems to disappear.

Resumen
La existencia de una gran cantidad de información en la Web, ha implicado el reto a nivel de investigación por encontrar soluciones que nos permitan realizar búsquedas de una manera más eficiente, a tiempo y con resultados coherentes. El artículo presenta la experiencia del proyecto Elena, en donde se ha implementado una novedosa infraestructura y solución informática usando algunas tecnologías del Web semántico para alcanzar la interoperabilidad semántica en el contexto de los sistemas de información educativos. El uso del Web semántico en el proyecto Elena ha permitido optimizar los procesos de búsqueda, identificar relaciones entre recursos y permitir la personalización de preferencias y rasgos particulares. Como caso práctico se presentará la integración del nodo educativo EducaNext dentro de la red de Elena, empleando el modelo semántico común para la descripción de recursos educativos, el API para consultas y lenguaje QEL.(leer más…)
