De Dépendance returns! Rotterdam’s platform for city culture is moving from the Schieblock to the Hofpoort, the former Shell Tower in the heart of the city. Building on the transformation of the Schieblock area, De Dépendance will bring the Hofpoort’s concrete colossus and its surroundings back to life. With its first project ‘Torre Hofpoort’ De Dépendance manifests itself as a new platform for public debate on the spatial, economic, cultural and political issues of our time. Tuesday September 8 De Dépendance will kick off with a discussion on the informal city by Alfredo Brillembourg (Urban-Think Tank), Justus Uitermark (professor of sociology UvA) and Kristian Koreman & Elma van Boxel (ZUS).

Torre Hofpoort
‘Torre Hofpoort’ marca el inicio de la dependencia en el Hofpoort. Torre Hofpoort
‘Torre Hofpoort’ marks the start of the Dépendance in the Hofpoort. The project includes the exhibition ‘Torre David – Informal Vertical Communities’, a research by design and five Public Talks at various locations in the building. Its goal is to bring the mostly vacant tower and its immediate surroundings back to life, while at the same time generating recommendations on current urban issues in Rotterdam and beyond.
The first public talk on September 8 themed the ‘informal city’ will take place on the 20th floor of the Hofpoort. The concept refers to unplanned urban development often seen in megacities of the global south, but is becoming increasingly relevant in the Netherlands as well. The evening will kick off with a lecture by Alfredo Brillembourg (Urban-Think Tank), attached to ETH Zurich and winner of a Golden Lion (Venice Architecture Biennale in 2012), followed by a discussion led by Farid Tabarki (Studio Zeitgeist). Justus Uitermark (professor of sociology UvA) and Kristian Koreman & Elma van Boxel (ZUS) will exchange ideas with Alfredo Brillembourg on value of ‘spontaneous’ strategies for urban development and the transformation toward a more self-organizing city. De Dépendance
De Dépendance fue fundada en 2009 por ZUS oficina para dar cabida a las organizaciones e iniciativas que buscaban un espacio situado en el centro de sus exposiciones, debates, coloquios, proyecciones de películas y talleres. De Dépendance
De Dépendance was founded in 2009 by office ZUS to accommodate organisations and initiatives that were looking for a centrally located space for their exhibitions, debates, symposia, film screenings and workshops. Also, by moving into the run-down Schieblock, it was a catalyst for the development within and around the building.
Now that de Dépendance has succesfully contributed to the creation of a new hotspot in the city, it will restart in the mostly vacant Hofpoort. Here, de Dépendance will deploy the lessons learned from the Schieblock: explore the possibilities of the building, motivate government, developers and investors to consider possible new uses, and breathe new life into the tower. Led by Thijs Barendse de Dépendance will manifest itself as the new platform for public debate on the spatial, economic, cultural and political issues of the 21st century.
