El titulo del post hace años que lo escribí tras interesarme por este joven de Malawi (África) que le pidió al padre que le comprara una bicicleta. La desarmo y con las partes de la bicicleta construyo una turbina eólica con la cual daba luz eléctrica a su vecindario. Reescribo este post ya que he vuelto a revisar sus progresos y me gustaría compartirlos contigo.
William Kamkwamba inicio a los 14 años a interesarse por la energía, leyendo libros que encontraba en su comunidad (cuenta haber tenido que abandonar la escuela para ir a trabajar). Su primer modelo consistía en una torre de madera de 5 metros, en la cual giraba una rueda de la bicicleta (impulsada de las astas) conectada a un dinamo. El dinamo cargaba una batería de 12V. La batería era suficiente para encender cuatro focos, dos radios y la carga de baterías de un teléfono celular. La noticia llamo la atención de los periodistas locales y Wiliam se convirtió en una pequeña celebridad.
Con el pasar del tiempo la eficiencia de la turbina aumentaba, llegando a hacer funcionar una bomba para ayudar en el regadío de los campos. La torre fue reconstruida mas alta (12 metros) y mas lejana de la casa (para evitar el riesgo de daños en caso de caída). Luego de haber visto que las astas giraban y producían corriente, ha decidido de hacer un salto tecnológico y ha sustituido las astas de plástico con astas de metal.
Ahora William esta pensando en mejorar la eficiencia de las astas capturando también la energía del sol, además de la del viento.
